About Me

My name is Harper Montgomery. I live with my husband and two daughters in the red-blooded, gun-toting, resolutely Republican state of Wyoming, where I teach junior high social studies.

I consider myself to be conservative, but not a Republican (I am anti-partisan). I was raised by an extremely staunch right-wing Republican father and a moderate mother. I am old-school in my interpretation of the U.S. Constitution, and my views are shaped by my Christian faith. Here is my opinion on a few important issues, in no particular order:

Abortion – I believe that life begins at conception. I believe that abortion should only be legal in cases of rape, incest or of absolute medical necessity.

Military – I hold with Teddy Roosevelt, “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” America ought to be the best military in the world and should always be prepared. However, I believe that military actions should only be taken when there is no other adequate solution.

Gun Control – I believe in a literal interpretation of the 2nd Amendment. That said, I do think there is room for common sense in terms of what type of weapons and ammunition should be available.

Gay Marriage – This one is a tricky issue, because I believe compassion is important. I believe in marriage between a man and a woman. I also think this issue should be left to individual states to determine (as per the U.S. Constitution).

Education – As a teacher, I think education is extremely important. I think that No Child Left Behind has wrought terrible damage on our school systems. I think schools need adequate funding and resources, and teachers ought to be paid and treated as professionals. I also like the Common Core (gasp).

Welfare and Healthcare – I think that both systems are in dire need of reform. Obamacare is not the answer, but what we had before wasn’t working either.

Political Parties – George Washington warned of the consequences of political parties, and we are reaping them today. I think both the Democratic and the Republican Parties are festering cesspools of corruption and incompetence who have lost sight of what our country needs. I believe that our political system is in urgent need of reform.
